Carton Packaging Machine Guide: 5 Types of Carton Packaging

For food, beverage, daily chemical, pharmaceutical, and e-commerce companies, carton packaging is the final hurdle before shipment. The sealing method you choose directly impacts transportation safety, production line efficiency, material costs, and export compliance, especially for sea and pallet shipping.

This guide details the five most commonly used carton packaging types in end-of-line automation of industrial production lines.

I Tape For Sealing The Carton

This sealing method shares the same basic carton closure function as all tape-based carton packaging, only it applies a single strip of pressure-sensitive tape along the center seam of the top and bottom carton flaps. This sealing type is widely used in e-commerce fulfillment, daily chemical production and domestic distribution lines.

H-Type Four-Corner Carton Sealing

This packaging format delivers the same basic seam sealing performance as standard I-type sealing, only it adds four additional vertical tape strips along the carton’s corner edges to form an “H” shaped tape pattern. The reinforced corner sealing has a vital structural function: it drastically improves the carton’s compression resistance and edge rigidity. This sealing method is widely used for heavy cargo, export shipments, home appliances and building materials.

Hot Melt Glue Carton Sealing

This closure method achieves the same core goal of securing carton flaps as tape sealing, only it uses food-grade thermoplastic adhesive instead of plastic tape to form a permanent bond. This sealing type is widely used in food, beverage and pharmaceutical production lines, as well as retail-ready packaging.

Side-Seal Carton Packaging

This sealing method follows the same pressure-sensitive tape closure principle as top-bottom carton sealers, only it applies tape to the left and right vertical sides of the carton instead of the top and bottom seams. This packaging type is widely used for bottled drinks, tissue products, foam packaging and long flat goods.

#-Type Grid Carton Sealing

This sealing method operates on the same tape-reinforced closure principle as cross carton sealing, only it adds one extra tape strip in both horizontal and vertical directions to form a “#” (well-shaped) grid pattern across the carton surface. The evenly distributed grid sealing structure serves a critical ultra-heavy-duty reinforcement function: it disperses stacking and handling stress across the entire carton top, preventing the box from bulging or splitting along center and side seams under extreme load.
